This June marks the 30th anniversary of Black Music Month. We commend Mr. Kenny Gamble, of the popular R&B songwriting and production team Gamble & Huff, for being the person who encouraged former President Jimmy Carter to officially designate June as a time to acknowledge the contributions Black musicians have made to the art form.
While most of the emphasis on Black music today is placed on contemporary artists, the original intent of the proclamation was to remember the evolution of Black music in America.
During the 17th and 18th centuries slaves who attended church also applied the call-and-response style of music when singing hymns and psalms. This approach extended to singing that occurred in the plantation fields and eventually created the Negro Spirituals and other areas that impacted popular American music.
Check your local listings for special events in honor of Black Music Month all throughout June.
